Photo: The Bodhi Tree
At the western side of the Mahabodhi Stupa in Bodhgaya stands the large and historic Bodhi Tree. It is here, seated under the Pipal (ficus religiosus) Tree that Siddhartha Gotama achieved enlightenment approximately 2550 years ago. Hence it is the holiest shrine of the Buddhist World.

During the course of his quest for the Ultimate Truth, Siddhartha Gotama arrived at Senani, the market town in Uruvela on the banks of the river Neranjana. It was a Pipal (ficus religiosus) tree that became famous as the Bodhi Tree after the Enlightenment (Bodhi) of Siddhartha.

Taking his seat under the tree he made the firm resolution; "Let my skin, sinews and bones alone remain, and let my blood and flesh dry up, yet never will l move from this seat without attaining full Enlightenment". After His Enlightenment the Buddha spent seven weeks at Bodhgaya enjoying the bliss of emancipation (vimuti sukha).
